16 Western & English Today SUMMER 2015 2015 STATE OF THE INDUSTRY REPORT Retailers report gross sales, net profits trending upward, with most indicating optimism for continued growth and profitability. T he response to this year's State of the Industry Survey was the highest ever; Western & English Today thanks all of the store owners and buyers who took time to participate in our electronic survey. Nearly half (49 percent) of retailers completing the survey report annual gross sales increased in 2014 as compared with the year be- fore, and 45 percent of the stores saw their net prof ts increase. Best of all, more than half of all stores expect their gross sales and net prof ts to increase in 2015. More than three-quarters of stores report that Western apparel and accessories are their store's primary business. Boots reamin the No. 1 most prof table category, with women's apparel and accessories the second most prof table category. Sixty percent of retailers report that attending trade shows is their primary source for f nding new vendors, with trade maga- zines and Internet searches vying for second place. And when they decide to buy, they want it now: T e most important factor in ven- dor selection is if the product is in stock, trailed closely by a concern for shipping costs. Stores have increases salaries, as well, since we last f elded the State of the Industry Survey in 2013: More than 38 percent of store managers make $2,001 or more per month, compared with just 30 percent in 2013, an increase of more than 27 percent. Finally, we wish to thank our retailers for their loyalty to Western & English Today: More than three-quarters of our retailers read four of our f ve issues in 2014, and nearly nine of every 10 shared their copies with other team members. — Susan L.
