12 Western & English Today SPRING 2018 F o c u s o n E n ga g e m e n t More than ever before, the algorithm is favoring good ol' fashioned conversation. It's seeking out content that signals real people are finding your posts both interesting and useful. at's great news! Want to improve your reach and growth? Just act like a real, live, helpful friend, and start chatting up your followers. Don't bury the lead. While you have 2,200 characters available to you for each caption, the excerpt visible in the feed is only the first 125 characters. Ask your question or drop your knowledge at the start to encourage comments and get people to click on the post for more information. Be real. It's just that simple. Interact authentically with your audience, and set aside just a little time each day, even 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes in the late aernoon, to answer questions and respond to comments on your own posts. Scroll through your followers' posts, too, and engage with them by commenting on your favorites of their posts. Make your comments count by saying something meaningful. Don't just always throw up a heart emoji or a quick "thanks!" Instagram counts comments with four or more words as "official" engagement, which contributes to increasing the likelihood of posts being seen organically. While the social media landscape is guaranteed to shi and change over time, the one thing that remains constant is that behind every screen is a real person with real emotions, interests, and needs. If you put a few of these tips into practice, there's no reason to spend your time fretting over algorithm updates. Just get in there and start mixing it up!
